“A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L’Engle

Just because you don’t understand doesn’t mean that the explanation doesn’t exist.

I recently learned that my son had read this book in middle school. I picked it up for a light read. It’s sometimes refreshing to sit in the shade with a children’s book and this one fit the bill. I really enjoyed the first two-thirds of the book. The characters were established very well and the story took an intriguing shape. Many philosophies of thought and religiosity are introduced throughout the events. Most of the items I underlined were spoken by one of the multi-dimensional characters who uses a thorough knowledge of earth’s literature to communicate. Though the end of the tale felt rushed and was not as well-formed as the story began, I did enjoy my time with the unique individuals on their time bending journey.

Here’s what I underlined along the way:

  • Mother’s not a bit pretty; she’s beautiful.
  • The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
  • One thing I’ve learned is that you don’t have to understand things for them to be.
  • Let’s not worry about next year until we get through this one.
  • Nothing deters a good man from doing what is honorable. – Seneca
  • Faith is the sister of justice.
  • I’ve never even seen your house, and I have the funniest feeling that for the first time in my life I’m going home!
  • You don’t know how lucky you are to be loved.
  • Just because you don’t understand doesn’t mean that the explanation doesn’t exist.
  • What grievous pain a little fault doth give thee! – Dante
  • An old ass knows more than a young colt. – A. Perez
  • To action little, less to words inclined. – Horace
  • Nothing is hopeless; we must hope for everything. – Euripides
  • The more a man knows, the less he talks.
  • The work proves the craftsman.
  • For his children he may be able to do what he cannot do for himself.
  • Experience is the mother of knowledge. – Cervantes
  • We are such stuff as dreams are made of. – Prospero in The Tempest
  • Of course we can’t take credit for our talents. It’s how we use them that counts.
  • Ttherre willl nno llonggerr bee sso manyy pplleasanntt thinggss tto llookk att iff rressponssible ppeoplle ddo nnott ddo ssomethingg abboutt thee unnppleassanntt oness.
  • How small the earth to him who looks from heaven. – Delille
  • And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
  • I do not know everything; still many things I understand. – Goethe
  • Like and equal are not the same thing at all!
  • Like and equal are two entirely different things.
