“Dad, wanna hear my life song?”
I always enjoy conversations with my son. Sometimes, though, we just put on some tunes and sing together as we drive down the road. This was one of those days. The inquisition came mid-song and caught be off guard, “Dad, wanna hear my life song?” This is pretty big stuff coming from the mouth of a 12 year old. I don’t even have a life song. What exactly is a life song? In the moment of scattered thoughts, only one word was necessary, “Yes!”
As he enthusiastically touches the screen of his iPhone, a smile comes across his face combined with a look in his eye saying, “Get ready for this.” He reaches for the volume nob to increase our already raucous decibel listening level. “Here goes…”

As I listen to the words, a smile similar to his slides across my face. His confidence strides even higher as he takes this as a sign of approval. When the song ends, I ask him why he chose this song. Things get serious as he let’s me know that he really does believe in himself and this song helps to remind him of what he already knows to be true. You see, every night for many years, I have prayed Joshua 1:5 over Samuel’s life claiming God’s promise to Joshua over Samuel. Apparently, this has taken root in his mind and heart. The closing to our nightly prayers goes something like this:
“…and God, I want to thank you for the promise you gave to Joshua that we are claiming over Samuel – that all the days of his life, no man will ever be able to stand against him. For just as you were with Moses, you are with Samuel; and you will never leave him or forsake him.“
